WHAT WE TEACH
MAXTED
FIGHTING SYSTEM

This system comprises mainly from the 3 arts outlined below
  • Jun Fan Gung Fu (Jeet Kune Do)

Jun Fan Gung Fu (Bruce Lee's Kung Fu) was created by Bruce Lee around 1959. It was when he came to the United States that he decided to teach students of all ages, races and martial art backgrounds (something very rare at that time).

He had training in Wing Chun (from Grandmaster Yip Man), his training in Western Boxing (HK high school Boxing champion 1958), and Fencing (from his brother Peter, a college champion). He also had knowledge of other Gung Fu systems, all of which he incorporated into Jun Fan Gung Fu.

After a challenge match in 1964, he decided to re-evaluate his martial art training from his fitness, training methods and the whole structure of his art. He named this Jeet Kune Do, and is meant to be different for each individual. JKD is not a style, but a set of concepts designed to liberate the practitioner from tradition and stagnation.

  • Wing Chun Kung Fu

Wing Chun is one of the most popular martial arts in the world today, known for its short-range, efficient and direct fighting style. It is said to be around 300 years old and was first popularised by Grandmaster Yip Man (Ip Man) in 1960's Hong Kong. World fame was to come which was down in a big way to his most famous student, Bruce Lee.

It regained popularity in the 2000s due to the Ip Man film franchise, starring action star, Donnie Yen.

  • Rapid Assault Tactics

Paul Vunak is the founder of the Rapid Assault Tactics (R.A.T) program. He created this program for the military (Navy SEALs) in the eighties and has since been taught to several different government agencies and military units across the world. See below for more information.

At Worthing Fighting Arts we teach segments of the program that fit into the system, but if you would like training in the R.A.T program exclusively, you can book private training.

Rapid Assault Tactics (R.A.T)

Paul Vunak is a student of leading JKD authority, Guro Dan Inosanto. He joined his academy in 1977 and quickly became one of the most dedicated and top students. He also became known as the academy's real world street fighting specialist.

It was down to this reputation and his problems with the law, that he was recruited by the Navy SEALs in the eighties. They were after a program that could be taught to the SEALs that was extremely effective, could be taught in a short space of time, and once taught, they could continue to work on themselves without the need of constant supervision. This is where the R.A.T program was born. It has since been taught to groups such as the FBI, CIA and SWAT teams.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Head Instructor Profile Picture
Thomas Maxted
Head Instructor
Thomas started his journey in the martial arts aged 8 in the year 2000 in the Genbukan Ninpo Bugei system under Zeb Glover. After being unable to attend classes due to relocation, he then joined Go Kan Ryu Karate.
He trained with GKR for a number of years before deciding in a complete change of direction.
Being a fan of Bruce Lee from a very young age, and with some influence from his father, Tom discovered Wing Chun (Bruce Lee's first martial art) and then subsequently Jeet Kune Do.
Having known of these two arts for many years, he then decided this was the path to follow. He sought out Sifu Emil Martirossian, and Steve Eldridge.
With a fondness for the Wing Chun portion of Jeet Kune Do, he also trained at a number of Wing Chun schools for short periods to really get a flavour and more in-depth knowledge as to what Wing Chun was really about.
After getting a thirst to share his knowledge and teach, he had the opportunity to train in Paul Vunak's Rapid Assault Tactics (R.A.T) system from his UK representative (Paul Starkey) and gain instructorship to be able to share this art with others.
He has now devised his own system (Maxted Fighting System) that brings together his knowledge and experience of these different arts, to form a complete and effective, stand-up fighting system.
